I turned on the news this morning, schlumping lazily out of bed later than usual. As I watched the news of Osama bin Laden’s death break I was transported back ten years.
I woke up late that morning, too. I was doing some reading for my First-Year Seminar, a sort of introduction to some of the major texts of Western civilization, at Simon’s Rock. I’d started college about three weeks before with a gaggle of fresh-faced first-years, all of us ‘younger scholars’—younger than your average 18-year-old freshman, that is.
