About two weeks ago I decided to give myself an early birthday present by heading out to see a play. London is a good place for that sort of thing. Nothing ventured, nothing gained, I thought as I walked towards the great hulking form of the National Theatre. A new production of Frankenstein is on there. It’s been sold out for weeks. You’d need to promise the box office staff your firstborn in order to secure tickets at this time (though frankly, I understand that arrangement frequently backfires.) But all hope was not lost: on the website they did say that there were still a few day returns left, available in person only. The box office attendant gravely informed me that there were none available (though more on this to come.)
